LingoDeer DevLog (archived from June 13)

Hi all! Hope you’re doing well. In the spirit of community openness, we’ve decided to start publishing ~LingoDeer developer logs~ to keep you updated on all our improvements, big and small.

So here’s what we did in the first half of June:

Increased usability of the SRS Flashcards:
a) audio replay in any display mode; adjustable audio speed & font size;
b) relevant unit look-up: click the information icon ⓘ in the top right corner of the flashcard to look up which unit a word/expression first appeared in;
c) you can now review flashcards marked as “New”, “Needs work”, “Good”, “Perfect”, and any combination thereof by checking the relevant boxes before you start your review;

Added Practice mode to Words/Expressions Review so you can do your favorite types of exercises;

To get your favorite Practice mode started, go to the REVIEW tab, select Words or Expressions, choose the units you'd like to review, and click PRACTICE.

– Adjusted the difficulty of spelling exercises in Mandarin Chinese (we went from super-difficult to super-easy… and now it seems like we’ve finally found the middle ground!);
– Corrected some of the Tips and word & sentence translations for French, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Japanese courses (e.g., replacing some AmE terms that might sound confusing to the rest of the world);
– Localized Mandarin Chinese tips for Vietnamese speakers up to Unit 40;
– Got rid of the much-contested flag icon 🚩 in the Day Streak calendar (we’ll find a better way to mark your milestones later);
– Added the Share option 📤 to Day Streak (you can find it in the top right corner of the Day Streak calendar).

Currently working on:
– Dark mode for Malay, Indonesian, and Polish tips;
– Fixing the desktop/Android learning progress lag;
– Upgrading iOS Ul (hopefully we can get the beta out by the end of next week – wish us luck!).

✍ Thank you for all the feedback that made these changes possible! We’re looking forward to hearing your thoughts about these updates (and just your thoughts in general). Remember that you can always reach out to us by email at hi@lingodeer.com and support@lingodeer.com, via the Contact Us form in the app, or on r/lingodeer 🙂

Happy learning!

Some updates on the European courses like German would be great.
German hasn’t been upgraded properly for years, i would love to get more CEFR based content and to show more info of the level the content is from.

Thank you so much for your efforts in making this amazing app for language learners. I use it to learn many languages at the same time, and let me tell you this is the best one out there.

Thank you so much for your work! I really love using your service. It’s so much better than a certain other app with a green owl that’s replacing their workers with AI now…

Thank you for your good work and for all the improvements.

I support the earlier request for more focus on European language courses. It would be great if the European Spanish course for example could be extended to level B2.

Please stop trying to turn this app into Duolingo. Some of these changes are unnecessary and make quality of the app worse. We don’t need streaks and gems and leaderboards

Thank you so much for making this app! My Korean has progressed more than it has done before. I noted after the update there isn’t an option to type out answers. I felt that helped me so much to practice my Korean and was wondering if you can bring it back?

Awesome. I really think updating the SRS then adding curated sentences for the most frequent 2000 words (perhaps excluding words from the main course) would be such a great addition. That can give us a strong foundation in vocabulary. It can be an add-on after finishing the main courses.

There is a reason why I picked Longodeer over Duolingo. It’s because more grammar based and mature. Now that I updated the new version I instantly regret it. I’m a 29 years old and I really don’t need these gems and streak game based to keep me hooked… it’s now confusing and bit annoying ( also for the speaking part it takes forever to evaluate my audio, the previous version used to do that in no time) can I please get back the previous version? Thanks

SRS is great! Can I have the control to add more items to the SRS review? especially I feel some previous learned item is fading.It would be great if I can add them to the new review system

Happy for the updates. Just a suggestion though, stroke order and practice for the Thai characters. It seems like a pretty new language that’s been added but writing of the characters would go a long way in helping.
