LD: Tell us about yourself!

**A:** My name is Ally, I'm a 26-years-old French girl, currently living and working in Singapore as legal counsel for a big international company. My main hobby at the moment is learning the Japanese language, and I created an Instagram account at the beginning of that process (in May 2019) to follow my progress and give me motivation! After a very intense year, and since I made very good progress, I'm also using my account to convey positivity and give inspiration to others to either start learning a foreign language or do their best in learning their target language(s). My ultimate message is: if you work hard for it, anything is possible: I am the proof!

LD: What got you interested in the Japanese language?

**A:** I honestly don't know, it just happened! I had always been attracted to the culture and the country, like many French people, but never thought I would be able to learn the language one day. But then at the beginning of 2017, I just stumbled upon a French YouTube channel offering free beginner courses for Japanese (*Cours de japonais!* by *Julien Fontanier*), and I got hooked because I realized that learning the language was possible! It took me almost 2 whole years to properly start studying the language because I wanted to be done with my studies first, and since then I have been very passionate about it. I guess on the language itself I could say it is the reunion of the language having ideograms (kanji) which I had always wanted to learn to decipher, and being so fresh and different from the two languages I already know, that got me hooked. Plus I love how it sounds, and I love discovering Japanese expressions and sayings along the way!

LD: Name three things you want to do with your japanese skills. Please explain why.

**A:** On top of reaching overall fluency, I would like to (1) **be able to work in Japan and use the Japanese language in everyday working life**, because my current goal is to be able to live there, (2) **be able to read anything and NOT struggle on the kanji**, since this is one of the hardest parts of the language and I want to be able to read Japanese literature without difficulty, and (3) **be able to communicate easily in all levels of politeness**, since again, mastering this like natives do comes with this language and is therefore a goal in itself.

**LD: What is your learning routine? How do you use LingoDeer?**

**A:** I have detailed posts about my routine on my account, but very simply I can say that I study Japanese at any free moment I have during the day, and I make it a point to study it or be in contact with it everyday. That's very important in my opinion. When I'm in transports and I only have my phone on me **LingoDeer and LingoDeer+** **are very useful to maintain that constant immersion**. I especially like the tab "Fluent Japanese" on LingoDeer and the contents for intermediate/advanced learners, and also the games "Word Express", "Memory Castle", "Sea of Verbs" and "Speed Reply" on LingoDeer+. Usually when I spend time on the applications I combine all those contents, and it's always satisfying since it's not that easy and always challenging! Learning a language through games has always been one of my motto because I'm convinced it allows for the vocabulary words to stick and it is crucial to get a general grasp of the language. LingoDeer and LingoDeer+ are very good applications to allow for this natural immersion I'm looking for.

**LD: What do you do when you feel stuck or frustrated by** **Japanese** **?**

A: Invariably, I would stop all studying and would just pick up a book I've always wanted to read in Japanese (I have them in my bookshelf precisely for that purpose) or I would watch or rewatch a Japanese movie, drama or anime. Sometimes, if I am really frustrated, I only listen to my favourite Japanese music. It always calms me down realizing that I still **love the language**, that I already know a lot, and that if I keep fighting **I will surely reach my goals**. It gives me inspiration to continue. And also, art in any form or language heals everything, right?
